Gifford Devine’s next generation: young lawyers shaping the future of a Hawke’s Bay firm

Gifford Devine’s growing team of young lawyers is shaping the future of one of Hawke’s Bay’s most established law firms. Supported by experienced partners and a collaborative culture, they’re gaining broad experience across the firm’s wide range of legal services. From property and commercial to family law, they represent a new generation combining professionalism, energy, and local connection to deliver great results for clients.

Anna Boult – Solicitor

Anna Boult knows she will always be welcome at Gifford Devine, even if her career eventually takes her overseas. Part of the property and commercial team, she joined the firm after a summer clerkship and says the experience immediately confirmed that it was the right place to begin her career.

“At uni, everyone seemed to be applying for roles in the big cities. But after working here I realised how much more variety and experience you get in a provincial firm.”

Within property and commercial, she works across everything from residential conveyancing to commercial leases and subdivisions. “You’re hands-on from the start and constantly learning.”

Anna says support from the partners has been central to her development. “They’re approachable and always willing to teach. You can ask questions any time, and they’ll take the time to explain.”

She is also part of a strong group of young professionals and recently helped start a social committee. Looking ahead, she plans to travel but says she can see herself returning.

“Gifford Devine feels like home.”

Stan Roper – Senior Solicitor

For Stan Roper, joining Gifford Devine in Hawke’s Bay has been one of the best decisions of his career. After studying at Otago, he worked at large firms in Auckland and Wellington before deciding he wanted a change of pace.

“I’d done the big-firm experience. The work was interesting, but life in the cities felt like all work and no time for anything else,” says Stan, a keen surfer.

When his partner, a doctor, moved to Hawke’s Bay, Stan followed and quickly found a professional home at Gifford Devine.

Specialising in property and commercial law, he says the difference was immediate. “No two days are the same. You get direct client contact and meaningful responsibility, and you can make a real impact.”

Outside work, Stan says Hawke’s Bay offers the balance he was missing. “You can finish work, grab your board, and be out surfing within minutes. That lifestyle makes a huge difference.”

He sees a bright future in regional law. “There are huge opportunities here — interesting work, great clients, and a way of life that’s hard to match.”

Toby Hunter – Solicitor

For Toby Hunter, joining Gifford Devine has been the ideal place to build a broad legal foundation. After completing his law degree, Toby was working in Wellington when a catch-up with Partner Iain Taylor — who he met during a summer internship — led to an unexpected opportunity with the firm.

He joined in late 2023, initially working remotely before returning home to Hawke’s Bay. Now part of the property and commercial team, Toby values the variety and responsibility the role offers.

“The work is incredibly broad. One day it’s conveyancing or trust matters, the next you’re reviewing commercial contracts or subdivision projects. You learn something new every week.”

Direct client contact has been one of the biggest advantages of working regionally. “You’re not hidden behind layers of hierarchy. From the start you meet clients face to face and build those relationships yourself. That’s the best part of the job.”

He also appreciates the firm’s supportive culture. “You’re encouraged to explore different areas of law and develop your strengths. There’s real opportunity here to grow into the kind of lawyer you want to be.”

Charlotte Cullen – Solicitor

For Charlotte Cullen, becoming a lawyer always felt like a natural path. Growing up in Hawke’s Bay with two police officers in the family, she knew she wanted a career that helped people. Family law, she says, provides exactly that.

“Supporting clients through difficult times is incredibly rewarding.”

After completing her law degree at Victoria University, Charlotte returned home to start her career at Gifford Devine, where she had interned during summer.

“That internship was a turning point. You’re involved from day one, meeting clients and learning directly from partners.”

Charlotte works closely with Partner Ingrid Squire and Associate Kezia Taylor across a range of family and property matters. “They’ve been incredible mentors. Watching how they handle complex cases with empathy and professionalism has shaped how I want to practise.”

The firm’s supportive culture is another highlight. “We have a great young team and a social committee that keeps everyone connected.”

Charlotte sees a long-term future in Hawke’s Bay. “It’s home. The lifestyle and opportunity to build a meaningful career make it the perfect place to be.”
