Turning Brain Science into Business Sense – Reframe Lab Business Profile

When Jo Dowley talks about the brain, she doesn’t begin with theory — she begins with people. Their stories. Their stress. Their strengths.

Jo has reframed her career more than once, each time stepping back in order to take a significant step forward. Her latest chapter is ReFrame Lab — a practice grounded in brain science that helps people reframe their personal lives, their leadership and their careers.

Jo’s professional life has woven together neuroscience, rehabilitation, education, psychosocial facilitation and leadership development — a rare blend that now shapes her work. At ReFrame Lab, she brings these threads together to help leaders, teams and individuals build clarity, confidence, growth and performance.

Today, she helps people understand what’s happening beneath the surface so they can think more clearly, respond more intentionally and navigate change with confidence. She translates complex neuroscience into simple, relatable tools that shift how people think, feel and communicate — helping them grow through uncertainty with clarity and steadiness.

“Our brains are incredible,” Jo says. “They’re constantly learning, adapting and responding, yet much of how we react today is shaped by what’s happened in the past. When we understand that, we can start to reframe how we think — and create change that truly lasts.”

While neuroscience can sound academic, Jo has a talent for making it simple, relatable and directly useful in everyday business. She turns complex concepts into real-world insights that help people communicate better, make clearer decisions and manage pressure with greater ease.

Modern research backs the approach: organisations using neuroscience-based leadership and development strategies report stronger engagement, better decision-making and greater adaptability. What once sounded niche is now a competitive advantage.

The ReFrame Framework: Reveal → Reframe → Rewire

At the heart of ReFrame Lab is Jo’s three-step framework.

“The brain changes through practice,” Jo says. “Insight is powerful, but action rewires our neural pathways. When we combine both, we create real progress.”

Her clients describe her programmes as “transformational”, “refreshing”, “the first time this has actually made sense”, and “grounded in real science, not fluff”.

“These are the areas we often shy away from, yet they are critical,” she says. “When people understand their own responses and can support others through challenge, they build trust. Trust is what drives sustainable performance.”

Her clients span executives, leaders, individuals, councils and community organisations. What draws them in is her unique mix of science and warmth, her ability to challenge thinking gently but deeply, and her grounding in emotional and psychological safety.

How Jo got here: from UK hand therapy to leadership and human development

Before calling Hawke’s Bay home, Jo built a respected career in England as an Occupational Therapist specialising in hand therapy — a field at the intersection of fine motor recovery, rehabilitation and brain science.

She led major hand therapy teams, including the largest hand therapy unit in the UK at the time, and quickly discovered she loved developing and growing people just as much as treating patients. She later chaired the education arm of the British Association of Hand Therapy and lectured at both the University of Liverpool and York St John University — roles that blended science, teaching and leadership.

A move, a pause — and a turning point

When Jo and her family moved to New Zealand in 2009, her clinical career paused. Her sense of identity shifted too, prompting big questions many people face during major transitions.

She went on to co-found the organisational insights platform Ask Your Team, supporting performance across Aotearoa. But after several demanding years, Jo hit burnout — feeling undervalued, overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted.

“It was impacting my health and the people I loved. I needed to step away.”

That challenging chapter ultimately led to profound personal change.

Rebuilding — and rediscovering purpose

Jo sought coaching, immersed herself in neuroscience-based leadership training and began reconnecting with her lifelong strengths: science, teaching, emotional intelligence, compassion and leadership.

During this time, she also joined the New Zealand Red Cross as a psychosocial facilitator and suicide-prevention educator — mahi she still does today. It grounded her in emotional steadiness and the courage required for difficult conversations, complementing her neuroscience coaching beautifully.

Through this rebuilding, Jo realised her past experiences were not to be discarded — they needed to be reframed for a new chapter in Aotearoa.

The birth of ReFrame Lab

At the end of 2024, with her youngest preparing to leave home for university and her confidence restored, Jo launched ReFrame Lab — a place where neuroscience becomes practical and relatable, and where people rediscover clarity, confidence and possibility.

Organisations now engage her to strengthen communication, deepen trust and build emotionally intelligent cultures — especially in times of uncertainty or change.

Why reach out

Whether you’re feeling stretched, overwhelmed or ready for growth, ReFrame Lab helps reveal the patterns shaping how you think, feel and respond — and turns that insight into meaningful, sustainable change.

Teams work with Jo to build stronger emotional culture, clearer communication and healthier, more effective ways of working.

“When people understand what their brain and body are doing, everything shifts. Once the internal noise settles, we move out of survival mode and into possibility — and from there we can see new paths, choose new responses and create the kind of lasting change we want.”
